Welcome to the first Psoas Massage + Bodywork Newsletter
Greetings!
Clients, friends, and massage enthusiasts: welcome to our new newsletter! At Psoas, we're dedicated to helping our clients stay happy, healthy, and well informed. The purpose of this newsletter is to help us do that even more systematically, and to reach all of you at once! In this issue and in the many to come, you'll find tips, discounts (cha-ching!), news about Psoas happenings, and pointers from some of our partners. Future issues will include sections on stretching, running and cycling trails, understanding your anatomy, healthy recipes, client polls, and even music suggestions (we hear "Hey, who is this playing?" pretty much all the time at Psoas - so might as well share our playlist!). Those of you who are regular clients already know this, but it's worth saying here: we're here to serve you. We want to help you feel better in your bodies. So please let us know if we're doing a good job, and how we can make your Psoas experience even better. info@psoasbodywork.com Here's to you health! ~ the Psoas staff

Why the name "Psoas"
Pronounced "so-as".
Deep within the core of the body, close to the spine in the
abdomen, lays a little known muscle called the Psoas. We marvel at the mysterious
nature of the Psoas and chose this muscle to represent us due to its essential
function in the body.
The Psoas works continuously - while running or walking,
sitting, and even reclining. It attaches the upper body to the lower body and
is vital for ambulation (walking or moving about). Whenever a leg is lifted,
the Psoas can be thanked. Janet Travell, a pioneer in Myofascial Trigger Point
treatment, called the Psoas the "Hidden Prankster" due to its elusive role in
many musculo-skeletal conditions from lower back pain to overly pronated feet.

Running recovery quick hits by Matthew Forsman... a.k.a. Marathon Matt
While there is no question that you can't knock out a half marathon, marathon, or any other substantive distance without putting in some consistent, quality training, it's often the case that runners don't focus NEARLY enough time/energy on RECOVERY.
Why is recovery important? It is during recovery that your body heals microtears in muscle fiber incurred from running. It is during recovery that your bones get stronger. It is during recovery that your body 'adapts' to the training that you've done.
To compromise recovery between your challenging run workouts is to compromise future running workouts, compromise your immune system, potentially compromise race day performance, and increase the chances of injury and aggravation.
With this in mind, below are a few 'recovery quick hits' that should help your body bounce back quickly from tough run workouts and reduce the chances of injury/aggravation:
WALK IT OFF Upon finishing your challenging long runs, walk around for a few minutes (5-10) to help increase circulation and flush lactic acid and other toxins out of your legs. STRETCH LIBERALLY following your walk.
HYDRATE Even if you didn't sweat like a hydrant, there's a high likelihood that you lost fluids during the run. Additionally, you likely lost sodium, potassium, and other vital electrolytes. Knocking back some water is a good idea, but drinking some Accelerade, Gatorade, or some other sports drink that replenishes sodium and electrolytes is a good idea as well. If you bring some of the aforementioned with you, you can drink while you do your post run walking/stretching routine. How do you know when you're 'rehydrated'? When you urinate is your urine clear? If so, you're good to go.
INGEST SOMETHING WITH THE MAGICAL 4:1 CARBOHYDRATE TO PROTEIN RATIO If you've just knocked out a tough long run or track workout, it's likely you've depleted some (or most) of your glycogen stores (your primary fuel source also known as-carbohydrates). Additionally, those nasty microtears in the muscle fiber need some help! If you ingest something with the magical 4:1 carbohydrate to protein ratio, you're getting glycogen/carbohydrates to replenish your depleted glycogen stores AND some quality protein for healing muscle fibers. BTW, Accelerade and chocolate milk are two GREAT options that contain the 4:1 formula (think 32 grams of carbs to 8 grams of protein). TIMING is important as well! The sooner you ingest something after a tough run, the BETTER! Shoot for 15-30 minutes after a tough run workout.
ICE BATH Talk about 'no pain, no gain'! It sounds scary, it sounds uncomfortable, and it sounds COLD! There's no way to sugarcoat it, taking icebaths is NOT fun! BUT, think about the last time you sprained an ankle, had a tender/sore muscle, or a nasty bruise. What did you do? Chances are you applied ice to help reduce the swelling/inflammation and expedite the healing process. Doing a little lower torso ice bath after a tough run workout is no different. As I mentioned earlier, you incur microtears in muscle fiber during tough run workouts. There's inflammation and swelling going on! Fill your bathtub with cold water (my tap water is SO COLD, I don't need ice!) and submerge the lower body for 10-15 minutes. Make sure to get a cup of coffee, a magazine, and/or something else to keep you pleasantly distracted from the cold. It sounds tough, but it's really just the first couple minutes that are challenging. If you're tough enough to knock out a tempo run, a track workout, or a 2 hour long run, what's 10-15 minutes in a tub of cold water. Shoot for getting in your ice bath 30-45 minutes after completion of your run.
The recovery quick hits above should have you bouncing back from your tough run workouts in short order ready to conquer that next run.

Disk of the Month You won't hear whale sounds or rustling leaves at Psoas. We take our music almost as seriously as our bodywork.
Almost!
Thievery Corporation Richest Man in Babylon
Genre: Chillout/Downtempo/Triphop
|
Richest Man in Babylon is like an old Stephen King paperback on a rainy Sunday- it's just plain comfy. Although it's not a huge departure from their vast library, Richest Man in Babylon infuses a lazy, velvety sheen over the artfully mixed tracks. Congas, strings, and smooth vocals make this release a slam dunk for anything from a casual dinner party to a meditative walk. The album is focused around dub and stresses its bass lines, so make sure you have some solid low end on your stereo system. It's not your average album that could lull you to sleep while at the same time be perfect party background music.
