Happy Holidays
Greetings!
Thanksgiving has come and gone and the holidays and New Year are fast approaching. Really, it's hard to believe but 2008 is coming to a close
and so is our first year in our renovated facility. Your support for Psoas has
been overwhelming and we hope that our efforts to create a great massage team
in a professional, yet comfortable facility have proven worthy of that support.
In this issue we will be welcoming a new member at Psoas,
announcing our expanded schedule (we are now open Sundays) and introducing and
explaining ART (Active Release Techniques).
We are also announcing the return of a Psoas favorite (Nora
is back) and providing you with some great holiday gift ideas.
And thanks for voting us Best of the Bay again. 2008 Best Massage Clinic in San Francisco and featured on KRON. Check out our video.
We very much appreciate all your support over the years.
Now don't eat too much over the holiday and of course stay
safe.
Peace out,
Psoas

What is A.R.T. and how it can help you?
Active Release Technique
A.R.T. is a patented, state of the art, soft tissue
system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles,
tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel
syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee
problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be
resolved quickly and permanently with A.R.T. These conditions all have one
important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.
How do overuse conditions
occur?
Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three
important ways:
acute conditions (pulls,
tears, collisions, etc), accumulation of small tears
(micro-trauma) not getting enough oxygen
(hypoxia).
Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough,
dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down
tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become
shorter and weaker, tension on tendons cause tendonitis, and nerves can become
trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If
a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.
What is an ART
treatment like?
Every ART session is actually a combination of examination
and treatment. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture,
tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves.
Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very
specific patient movements. It is non-invasive, very safe, has virtually no
side effects, and has a record of producing very good results.
These treatment protocols - over 500 specific moves - are
unique to ART. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific
problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART is not a cookie-cutter
approach.
In general ART is administered by shortening a structure
(muscle, tendon, ligament or fascia), applying specific tension to that
structure and then lengthening the structure. With the proper tension depth and
simple skill of the practitioner ART quickly reduces or eliminates scar tissue
and adhesions that cause tightness, reduced range of motion, soreness, tension
and pain.
ART can also address nerve entrapment which makes it a great
protocol for many patients with numbness, tingling and loss of strength in the
extremities.
We attempt to have our patients perform active movements
during the treatment process, which stimulates neurological reaction, thus reducing
pain during treatment. Treatments tend to take 8-15 minutes for each area being
treated.
Treatments can feel uncomfortable during the movement phases as
the scar tissue or adhesions "break-up". This discomfort is temporary
and subsides almost immediately after the treatment.
It is common to feel a duplication of your pain symptoms during
the treatment (a good indication that the problem has been identified).
Patients often say that treatment " hurts good". What condition can be treated with ART?
We use ART to treat a broad range of soft tissue injuries, including the following: - Arthritis
- Achilles tendonitis
- Ankle Injuries
- Back Pain/Injuries
- Bicepital Tendonitis
- Bunions
- Bursitis
- Carpal tunnel syndrome

Welcoming Jen Rubinstein to our Active Release Technique Practice!
We are excited to expand our A.R.T. practice in San Francisco by adding Jen Rubinstein to the staff. There are now 3 therapists with more hours dedicated to provide you with this great modality.
Jennifer
has always been passionate in her pursuit of understanding human nature. Her innate curiosity about the capabilities
and limits of the human body drew her to a career in massage
therapy. Her approach to massage is guided by an understanding of
kinesiology that is complemented by her deeply intuitive nature.
Jennifer
specializes in Active Release Techniques (ART), NeuroMuscular Reprogramming
(NMR), and Deep Tissue massage. She tailors each session to the specific needs
of the individual with the aim of releasing pain and discomfort, while
addressing the underlying dysfunctions of long held patterns of tension and overuse.
This approach has proven especially helpful for those who suffer chronic pain,
whether from sports-related injuries or other life events.
When
Jen is not practicing bodywork, she can be found in her mosaic studio. She sees
bodies and mosaics as being very similar - they are both made up of small parts
that create a larger whole. Bodies are made up of millions of cells, tissues,
and muscles - each sculpted by experience to tell its own unique story.
Mosaics, though made of glass or tile or found objects, also have a story to
tell.
