Quick Tip: Are you using the right hip stretch?

Posted by on Mar 15, 2018 in Health and Wellness, Stretches

There are so many different hip stretches out there, so it can be hard to find the one that’s right for you. And for those of us with overworked lateral rotators of the hip, it’s really important to stretch them. Still, we have to approach these stretches with care, especially since stretching the hips can sometimes cause stress in the low back.

In this week’s Quick Tip, Scott does a quick run-down of our three favorite stretches for the lateral rotators of the hip, and reviews the benefits and drawbacks to each. The first version (figure 4) is a great way to prioritize stability and safety. The second version (pigeon pose) is awesome if you have an active yoga practice and don’t need to specifically isolate the lateral rotators. The third version, using a table or high surface, is a great way to stretch these important muscles without having to lower all the way to the ground.

Still not sure which one’s for you? Your therapist can help educate you about what they’re feeling in your musculature to help guide these decisions!
