Quick Tip: How flexible are your feet?

Most of us do not give our feet enough love. Our feet have enormous power to affect pretty much everything in the body, so it’s important to remember to stretch them along with the more commonly stretched psoas and hamstrings. In this week’s Quick Tip, Scott Schwartz shows off a great series of easy stretches to increase flexibility in the ankle, toes, and tops of the feet. This series is not recommended for anyone with serious dysfunction in the foot, but it’s great for maintaining overall health of the feet and preventing future pain.

Unless you have incredible balance, you’ll want to start standing with your hands resting on a chair for support. With feet at hips-width distance, take some deep bends in the knees. Do so slowly and gently, and enjoy the stretch all around the ankle. Next press the top of your left foot into the ground, curling your toes under. Repeat this a few times, and then try it again on the other side. Finally, bend into a squat, staying high up on your toes while using the chair for balance. Then allow your weight to ease you into a deep stretch of the toes. While you should expect to feel a nice stretching sensation in this series, you should not proceed if you experience any pain at all. If you have any questions about that, just give us a call. Otherwise, check this out and let us know how it goes!
